Hard Shell #3 and some other stuff.

Hard Shell Race # 3 is in the books!  More Turtles were in North Scituate than I expected and it was nice to see.  Also in attendance was MORE SNOW!  It was pretty much snowing all morning in North Scituate, which was a welcome change from the rain that some of us saw when we headed out the door on race morning.

This year’s race course was changed twice prior to race day.  It was originally slated to be different than the previous 7 versions of the race, no longer going over the causeway on Route 14, from what I was told, it seems this will be a permanent change.  However, the course that they were going to use was also not used, there was a lot of remaining snow on the fire road heading out towards the reservoir, so a new course that consisted of all paved roads was to be used.

It seemed that many Turtles had different agendas for race day.  Some have been recovering from injury, some wanted to just get in a steady effort, some were racing the following day and some were just there to get some miles in.  No matter the reason, there were 10 Turtles on the line, which brings the total number of Turtles that have raced at least once in the Hard Shell Series to 19, or about a third of the current membership, that’s not too shabby.

As for the race….well things were going well until about 1/2 mile in.  The leaders, which included myself, Dave Principe and a chatty fellow, whom actually won the Run with the Beavers 5 Miler last year.  We were moving along nicely, about to make the first right hand turn, following the police vehicle, when a volunteer screamed at us to go straight, we were pretty sure this was incorrect and we asked the lady 3 times, but she insisted it was correct and evidently there were signs that also said the 15k was supposed to go straight.

So right away we were all screwed up, fortunately the cop came back around and got in front of us, eventually getting us back on course, although about 1k short of where we should have been.  The rest of the run was made up of some up hills and some down hills.  I gapped Dave a bit on an up hill around 5 miles, but he came flying back by me on a cranking downhill around 6.5 miles…I felt like I was being chased by the dinosaur in Jurassic Park 3, the one that ate the satellite phone, you could hear the phone before you saw the beast.  Well the phone in this case was Dave’s GPS watch and the beast was Dave.  He went flying by me like a mad man and gapped me pretty good.  After the downhill there was a slight up hill where I was able to catch back up and gap Dave again and then hold onto that lead until the end.  The course ended up being between 8.7 and 8.8 miles.  The results had a pace shown for a 10 miles, which was amusing…there were also some people missing from the results.  But in the end, every Turtle that toed the line, won a prize!  So you could say it was a successful day!

August 2014 + Some Lost and Found Results

The first half+ of August has been pretty busy in Turtle racing land, at least 16 Turtles toed the line. I am sure there are some missing though. Here’s hoping that this cooler weather continues and fast times will follow!

Here are some long overdue results to be posted for Don Henderson whom now resides in Kansas. Don competed in back to back weekend 1/2 Ironmans in June. His running is a little off of what it used to be after getting hip resurfacing surgery (right hip metal implant) in Sept 2012, he had to take a year off from running/impact activities…but he has obviously been putting in some work on the bike! Great job Don!

Fat Belly Turtles

The Belly to Belly Charity Run was on May 31st and celebrated its 5th year . The race has changed shapes many time over the last 5 years and this year was no different, as it changed locations for the first time to the new Fat Belly’s at the North Kingstown Golf Course. This is by far the best location to hold this event and I believe it will only grow in future years.

The basis of this race is…DRINK…RUN…EAT…RUN…DRINK over the 2.5 mile course and TNT has dominated the race in previous years. This year however, some actual runners showed up to make it interesting. The main part of this Hot Dog Eating, Beer Drinking Race is the team competition. It is scored “cross country style” and the teams are made up of 2 members. TNT had four teams this year and they were pretty evenly matched up. In hind sight, seeing some faster runners there, we should have put our strongest two runners together to go for the “W”. But, we had some fun out there anyway!

Some thoughts on the race from Andrew Goodale
This was my first “food and drink” race, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had a blast, and my body held up better than expected! My main goal was to not throw up; winning the team race was also pretty high on the list… Things that I learned:
1. I can drink beer pretty fast when I put my mind to it.
2. Tripping over your shoelaces does not impact hot dog eating.
3. Patrick Quinn has mastered hot-dog eating.
4. If someone invites you to play a game involving electric shocks, don’t play left-handed (unless you are left-handed).

2013 – October Results

A bit late on the October results, but here they are.  I assume there are some missing, there are a bunch of races that do not put their results on Cool Running now.  So if you run a race, especially if it is out-of-state, please shoot me an email and we will include you in the results!  Most of November is already gone and there have been great results that will be posted soon!  If you have any photos from races or want to write a race report from a race you did, please let me know!  We will start off the October results with a DNF, courtesy of Patrick Quinn’s ankle…OUCH!  This happened at the end of his first lap at the TARC Fall Classic Trail Race.

July 2013 Results

Racing continued in the month of July for many Turtles despite the HOT weather!  It looks like at least 16 different Turtles got out there and got it done!  August racing will get underway soon with the Run4Kerri on Sunday 8/4/13 and the New England Runner Pub Series which returns on 8/18/13 in Portsmouth, RI at the Common Fence Point 5 Miler.  It would be nice to get a big crowd of Turtles at both of these races!

Here is a little contest for this blog post…first person to email me at rjackman11@gmail.com with the identity of the Turtle in this photo will win a free beer at Track 84 on a Tuesday!  (if you don’t drink…we will figure out an alternate prize)

We have a WINNER!  Dave Principe guessed correctly with Captain Ken Kirejczyk.  This photo was taken at the Will Speck 5k in June!
