Finishing off October!

There was one marathon result missed in the Fall Marathon Results post…Patrick Meacham ran the Via Marathon in Allentown, PA in September in 3:23:18.

Also congratulations to DJ Principe on winning the RI Class A Championships this past Saturday in a time of 15:19, his 1st place finish along with some breakthrough performances by his teammates lead Lasalle to the team victory.  He will defend his State Championship title this coming Sunday while Lasalle will also try to take down Hendricken for the second week in a row!

The October Hardshell Race Results are on HOLD…since I do not have official results from the Wild Bill 5k, if anyone has those results, please send them my way!

The November Hardshell Race is the Lil Rhody Runaround on 11/15/15….we generally have a good turnout there, it should be a great race!

Lastly, some self promotion…The 7th Annual RI 6 Hour is this coming Sunday!  There are some Turtles toeing the line in the Ultra!  Come on out and have a good time, I can always use more volunteers!!

Check out some results from the end of October and the first day of November!

Turtles at Boston

If you didn’t hear, the Boston Marathon happened yesterday.  Both the men’s and women’s races had some interesting battles take place.  In the women’s race, Shalane Flanagan set the pace early and led the women through 19 miles only to be overtaken with the defending champion Rita Jeptoo taking the win in course record time (2:18:57).  Shalane held on for over a 3 minute PR to finish 7th (2:22:02).  On the men’s side, what was dubbed the “Fastest Boston field ever” let Meb go after 15k.  Meb only had the 15th fastest PR going into Boston, but built up enough of a gap, that he was able to hold on for USA’s first win since Greg Meyer in 1983, he had to set a PR to do it (2:08:37).  There is some talk that the other Americans tried to “help” Meb, by using some Tour de France tactics and not leading the Africans in the chase.  Either way, Meb put it out there and came out on top!

The Old Fashioned 10 Miler was again struck with bad timing of a snow storm. Last year the race was cancelled at the last minute because of the police having safety concerned with the road conditions. This year, the race was again threatened with a big storm the day before. They seemed to have everything in place after last years issues, a “snow date” for the following weekend, many updates before the race once it was evident there would be a storm. But when all was said in done, the race ended up a 5 miler. I have run the OFTM many times and it is a great race, it must have been a tough decision and I definitely feel for the race organization, as I am sure there were a bunch of unhappy runners.

Turtle Bob Jackman teamed up with WTAC’s Mike Galoob and Whirlaway’s Steve Dowsett to win the relay portion of the National Championship on Sunday. The team was led off by Bob whom took the lead less than 1k into the race and held off the gaining Kevin Tilton (CMS) to give Mike a lead heading into the 2nd leg. Mike extended on this lead handing off to Steve to run the 3rd leg while Mike rallied to get ready to run the final leg. Steve handed off to Mike with a 35 second lead, Mike headed out conservatively in his last leg which saw his gap get on 2nd place get as small as only 15 seconds. Mike then pushed the last 1k to open up the lead and take the victory by 26 seconds with a total time of 46:42. The 2nd place team was the South Hill Distance Project, whom took the team title the day before in the Men’s National Championship, the Central Mass Striders rounded out the top three.

Holy Toledo – Sub 3!

Vicky Jasparro

A week and a half ago I had never heard of the ‘Glass City Toledo Marathon’. And until I decided to avoid the oven-like temperatures of Boston, I had never heard the expression ‘Holy Toledo’. However it certainly applies to my w/e of success in the Mid West.
Desperate not to throw away my months of training, a couple days before the 2012 Boston Inferno, I went online to marathonguide.com and looked for a backup race. My criteria were a fast flat course and a location where the long range forecast called for cool temps on Sunday 22nd April. It quickly became apparent that Toledo was my only choice. So I rallied to arrange last minute plane tickets and a hotel room, change vacation dates at work and add in a side trip to visit my mom in Cleveland. Then I sat and worried. Would I really be able to deliver on my training? Or would this all be an expensive stress filled waste of time? What if the weather forecast changed? Or the course wasn’t all that it was chalked up to be?
Apart from forgetting my checked bag at the airport in Cleveland (yeah – with all my running gear inside! Thank God I realized and went back), my travel to Toledo went off without a hitch. I arrived on Friday night so had plenty of time on the Saturday to visit the expo (tiny – quite the opposite of Boston) and drive the course to check out all its quirks and myriad of turns. I also went for a short jog to explore the last mile of the race so I would know exactly where it went and just how short it would feel the next day.
The Toledo Marathon is not large – close to 1000 runners, but there is also a half marathon and many relay teams which makes it feel like a bigger race. More importantly, as I found out, the course really is ‘Mid West flat’. It starts and finishes on University of Toledo campus, and winds its way through various beautiful neighborhoods and a metro park, as well as along two different sections of a bike path. All surfaces are paved and beautifully smooth. The only possible downside to the course is that the main roads are not closed to traffic and so runners are restricted to running in a coned off lane rather than being able to freely run the tangents as the course was measured.
Sunday April 22 was cold and overcast as promised, and slightly breezy. Temps were in the high 30s at the start of the marathon and while I was running never got above the mid 40s. My goal was sub 3, and my plan was to run a 6.50 pace in order to give myself a little bit of cushion. Other than a bad patch between miles 19 and 21, and the inevitable tiredness in the closing miles, I felt pretty good and strong most of the race and was able to just follow my plan. That said, I was anxious and constantly running scared, never really sure that I could or would meet my goal until the very end. During the race I went back and forth a few times with the ‘local running celebrity’ – “Tina” – who had friends on every corner and a running buddy to join her every few miles. However she opened a gap on me during my bad patch and so I just tried to keep her in my sights and use her to help me achieve my goal. The strategy paid off as in the last few miles along the bike path I managed to run in the 6.40s. I then pulled off my very last mile in 6.36 to cross the 50 yard finish line on the Toledo University football field in 2.59.14. This earned me 4th place female, a small cash prize and a jacket. Holy Toledo I did it! Sub 3! Boston here I come next year.
