Turtles do Christmas and the Old Mountain Trail 5k

The end of the year is near and that means two things…the Annual Turtle Christmas Party and the start of the South County 4th Season Trail Race Series.

This year’s Christmas Party was a big success thanks to Pieter Snoeren and his wife Michelle. We had a great turnout, lots of food, beer, spirits and espresso was to be had. I have shared some photos that were taken with phones throughout the night below!

Two days later on 12/21/14, the first day of winter, we had 14 Turtles toe the line at the Old Mountain 5k Trail Race. Overall it seems like the Turtles were happy with their results, many people ran the course faster than 2 years ago and some were just off, on the somewhat slower course.

Here are what some Turtles had to say about their races…

David Principe – The race went pretty well. I have been training harder as of late and was looking for a good race, but I was not going to alter my training schedule or resting up for this one. The course is very scenic and has a lot of twists and turns, so the times do not reflect the effort. The first part of the course is narrow and has small bridges/walk ways and a lot of small roots. You needed to get out quick and not get trapped behind anyone or you would be out of it before it really started!! There were over 100 people signed up this year, so a good start was even more important. I got out well and tried to keep people I knew were slower than me from getting to the woods before me. For the most part I was able to do that, but I did get trapped behind a couple of HS kids who went out hard and eventually were falling back. I do not like the section along the rock wall as it was a bit more dangerous than I like to tackle. I almost went down on a wet rock in that section, but was lucky to catch myself from falling. As the race progressed, I was looking for opportunities to pass the 2 HS kids, but I was not real familiar with the course even though I did run this race 2 years ago. Most of the course is all single track, so after a while of waiting I ended up just asking the kids to let me by and they did. One of them actually apologized as I went by. I said no problem and proceeded on. At that point I was thinking that I probably waited way too long and allowed Jeff Walker to hang behind me too long and not create any separation. Either way Jeff and I had both passed the 2 HS kids and were working our way to the next runner in a URI jacket. He was coming back to us and we caught up to him in a minute or so after passing the youngsters. However, there was no good spot that I felt comfortable with to make a move and pass him. I did not feel comfortable to just ask him to move and kept surging and then having to back off when I could not get by. When we went down the Rock Stairs we were in order (URI, Me Jeff) and were literally on each other’s heals. Then as soon as we were starting the downhill stretch back to the parking area, Jeff all of a sudden blew by me and the kid in the URI jacket. Jeff made a beautiful move at the perfect time and got in front of both of us. I tried to do the same, but the course started twisting and turning and I could not get by. The URI kid was struggling a bit and he held me back just enough for Jeff to get real a good gap. I ended up passing him in the trail just after we went by the parking lot on the uphill and before we came out of the woods to the downhill back to the open field. I unloaded as best I could on the downhill to catch back up to Jeff, but he was still a good amount ahead. I was trying to make up some time on the pavement too and was pushing hard just before heading up the grass embankment to the fence corner and was closing in on Jeff. I was hoping to maybe have a shot to nip Jeff at or before the line, but knew it would be difficult. As I went up the embankment, I rolled my ankle slightly and sort of grunted loudly, which alerted Jeff to my presence. Meanwhile the Youngster in the URI jacket was coming on strong too and we were all sprinting on the grass area to the finish. Jeff got there before us and the URI kid nipped me just before the line!! Oh well, it is what it is!! Jeff told me later that if he had not heard me that close behind him at the fence, that it may have been closer. I told him that if the Kid from URI was not coming on so strong I would not have gotten as close as I did. He forced me to get out of my comfort zone, but I could not hold him off. Either way, I was still pleased to have had the opportunity to “race” with someone the entire way. The week before I ran the Newport 10k and was alone for pretty much the entire race. That was a good race too, but it was nice to engage other runners instead of just pacing off the watch. I ended up running about 15 seconds faster than I did 2 years ago, but the effort felt much harder! Afterwards the other finishers concurred that the course was definitely slower due to the soft mushy ground this year. After we went on a cool down and got sort of lost, but it was good for me as I wanted a few extra miles since it was a Sunday. All in all a good way to spend the morning. Looking forward to the next race of the series.

Bob Corsi – I had a great race, felt really good despite hamstring problems for weeks. One thing about the start is if you didn’t go out at sub 60 for the first quarter, you got stuck behind slower runners, which was my case, but I eventually passed a few guys on the hill leading up to the boulder. I had a great finish, it is a great race and I had fun running the course 3 times!

August 2014 + Some Lost and Found Results

The first half+ of August has been pretty busy in Turtle racing land, at least 16 Turtles toed the line. I am sure there are some missing though. Here’s hoping that this cooler weather continues and fast times will follow!

Here are some long overdue results to be posted for Don Henderson whom now resides in Kansas. Don competed in back to back weekend 1/2 Ironmans in June. His running is a little off of what it used to be after getting hip resurfacing surgery (right hip metal implant) in Sept 2012, he had to take a year off from running/impact activities…but he has obviously been putting in some work on the bike! Great job Don!

Gaspee Days 5k: Some Turtle Stats

Gaspee Banner

The 49th Gaspee Days Foot Race is tomorrow.  This race has changed a lot in the last 49 years.  I don’t know all the facts, but the race has been anywhere from a 20k to a 5k and also used to be on a Monday night.  The current version of the race, a 5k, starting before the famous Gaspee Days Parade , has been around for some 15ish years. (Anyone have an exact year?)

The Turtles are usually well represented at the Gaspee Days 5k, as well we should be, our Tuesday night course is part of the race course.  So, I gathered up some data from our members about their times at Gaspee.  Although many call the race fast, I personally have never run well at Gaspee and the course doesn’t seem to be that fast…and the data backs that up.  Using our small pool of data from 14 Turtles, it shows that they are on an average of 40 seconds slower than their all-time 5k PR.  Obviously this data isn’t 100% conclusive, some of the Turtles Gaspee Days times came 10 or more years after their PR.  But some of the runner ran their PR the same year as Gaspee, within a month even and ran significantly slower at Gaspee.

GaspeeThe oldest results for Gaspee on Cool Running are from 1996.  LOOK HERE.  That year the winning times were 14:56 for John Gregorek and 17:19 for Moira Harrington and there were 324 finishers, with an average finishing time of 24:34.53.  Last year, the winning times were 14:43 for Will Sanders and 19:14 for Erin Carmone.  There were 1221 finishers with an average time of 29:33.00.  There are a lot more walkers now a days, which is why there are 4 times as many finishers.  If you take the average time of the top 324 finishers from last year, you get an average of 22:21.9, two minutes faster than in 1996.  The top 10 was a bit more competitive in 1996 though,  with an average of 15:42.3 vs 16:20.8.
